Surgical Assisting Guidelines and Position Statements

Certified Surgical First Assistants need to have a comprehensive publication focused on evidence-based Guidelines. These Guidelines were researched and developed, in order to aid in legislative efforts on behalf of practitioners and to provide readily available answers to questions asked by operating room supervisors.

The Guidelines will help assure patients, practitioners and allied health administrators that, from the classroom to practice, from the hospital to the surgery center, the practice of surgical assisting is aligned with the highest educational and performance standards.

The Guidelines are statements of the minimum expectation of the profession, that can be referenced by health care facilities that employ Certified Surgical First Assistants.

There are two different levels of Guidelines

Position Statements reflect a stance, viewpoint and/or perspective.

Guidelines Statements are criteria for best practices.

The Guidelines represents standards of care that are expected to be achieved.
